Lipo, Tummy Tuck or Both?
Question: After lipo do you need a tummy tuck? Is there alot of skin left hanging?
Answer: You may or may not need both. It depends on an individuals skin elasticity. When a patient has rapid weight gains or losses (pregnancy for example) sometimes the skin does not bounce back. The patient can pull it away and it sags. So these patients, regardless of their age, need skin resection when that body part is addressed. Evaluating a persons skin elasticity is a key element for all body contouring procedures. The best way to evaluate that is to come in for a consultation. During consultation I can tell whether liposuction alone will be effective in removing unwanted fat and whether your skin has the ability to shrink naturally.
It’s important to note that Liposuction alone will only remove the unwanted fat! Lipo does not tighten the skin. However, the fat will not come back if a patient maintains their weight and continues to keep their muscles toned.
Patients often ask about devices which are marketed as ’skin tightening devices’, the truth of the matter is that there is no device that consistently tightens skin. If skin tightening is your goal then Smart Lipo, the laser from Cutera called Tighten & Tummy tucks (ie removal of tummy skin) are required when your skin has lost its elasticity.
I tell my patients to stay tuned for devices that will work to tighten skin and decrease cellulite, I will try to keep patients as well informed as possible.
