Dr. Laurie A. Casas wants to explain important facts about breast augmentation, absolute and relative cup sizes and the options you have. It is critical to evaluate all the factors in this decision.
Question:
My breasts have always made me self-conscious. They’re much smaller than the rest of my frame. How do I decide which implant size would be best for me? I don’t want to end up with overly large breasts, or breasts which are out of proportion to the rest of my body.
Answer:
Many women are under the incorrect assumption that cup sizes are standard across all body frames. In fact, cup size is directly related to band size, so a 34B is very different than a 38B or a 32B.
If you are wearing a bra with a 34 –inch band size, you can assume that each cup size equals approximately 150-200cc. If you wanted to gain two cup sizes, you would choose an implant around 450cc. If you are wearing a bra with a 32-inch band size, each cup size equals roughly 100-150cc.
Choosing implants is a very personal decision, and each patient will have different goals. It’s important to spend time thinking about this decision before going ahead with surgery. I recommend buying a bra in the cup size you are interested in achieving with surgery. If you try the bra on under a tight shirt and fill it, then layer your regular clothes on top, you can get a sense of what this cup size would look like on your frame.
